Description
Shibashi Teacher Training (online)
The course has captions in English, French and Spanish.
As with previous Shibashi Teacher Training courses, it is expected that the location of those taking part will be spread across the globe. In order to make it as accessible as possible we have created an on-demand version that is released weekly over a period of 14 weeks. This is modelled on the previously run, streamed, courses. There are also two (one hour long) one to one sessions held on Zoom. The second session, the online assessment, is as rigorous as the live assessment. An in person assessment can be arranged (in East Kilbride, Scotland) for those who wish.

The Taiji Qigong Shibashi Instructor course provides a profound, experiential, knowledge of the Shibashi as well as all the tools and information needed to teach these exercises as true Qigong. Most qigong taught today is no more than mimicry of physical movements. Let’s face it, anyone can mimic the movements of these exercises and then pass it off as the real thing. It is the Internal work that makes it Qigong, Neigong, Dao Yin, or whatever other name is used for working with the Qi. You do not need to be, or want to be, a teacher to enrol on this course. About 30% of the people who have enrolled did so in order to deepen their understanding of Qi and Qigong. As most of the “qigong” being taught now is no more than physical movement it increasingly difficult to find genuine tuition.
This spread of purely physical qigong has prompted many masters to stop using the term and revert to the older names of Dao Yin and Neigong. What you call these methods is of little importance as long as you are truly working with Qi. That’s what we do…………… There is guidance in the name. The Eighteen Posture Taiji Qigong, also referred to as the Shibashi, is a set of Qigong exercises that utilise Taiji stances and movements. To practice correctly you must follow the rules that govern them. These stances are fundamentally important if the practitioner wishes to get the most out of the Qigong.
Since this set of exercises was introduced, in the early 1980’s, in many cases the adherence to the Taiji fundamentals has been lost and their true use as Qigong has been diluted to being no more than slow aerobics. This has led to the depletion of the true beneficial qualities of these exercises. The Yi guides the Qi through focus (Jing) and it is only when this happens that “slow aerobics” become Qigong. If there was no need for the focus and the listening then every exercise, no matter how it is done, could claim to be a Qigong exercise. A Completion Certificate, from San Bao School, will be awarded to participants who successfully complete the Shibashi Instructor course. The Shibashi Qigong Instructor course is suitable for anyone who wishes to learn the Internal workings of these exercises. For those who intend to teach, it is beneficial if you have already gained experience in working with Qi, including: –
- Taiji teachers/practitioners
- Qigong teachers/practitioners
- Reiki teachers/practitioners
- Shiatsu teachers/practitioners
- All Energy Work practitioners

- “I learnt so much on this course. It was really enjoyable and taught at different levels so it is only a couple of months after finishing that I appreciate some of the things we were told about. I have no doubt this will continue the more I put my learning in to practice.”
- “I have qualified in Therapeutic Qigong, Qigong for Sleep Problems, Qigong for Relieving Chronic Back Pain, Qigong for Anxiety and Depression, as well as my favourite: Des Lawton’s Shibashi Teacher Training Course at San Bao School, where I learned a lot more about Qigong than in any other training. Thank you, Des!”
- “In recent years I have facilitated Qi gong groups in nursing homes and day centres as well as working with individuals. I have also run workshops with voluntary groups and social care professionals. Since attending Des’s course (Shibashi Teacher Training course) I have adapted my Qi Gong to incorporate the internal aspects of this wonderful practice much more fully.”
- “Unfortunately I also have various experiences of Martial arts and Qi Gong taught ‘improperly’ and/or without the students best interests at heart. There were diamonds of knowledge to be had in there, but an awful lot of muck and potential harm to wade through. This reinforces my desire to share what I have learned from Des, who teaches with integrity, deep understanding and knowledge, curiosity, passion and humour.”
- “After having a couple of different teachers, I found Des Lawton and found his way of teaching to be the most instructive and beneficial. I really appreciated the understanding, knowledge and the subtlety of movement that he brought to the art of Qiqong and have been training with him ever since.”
- “I have found that the information from the course (Shibashi teacher training) is going to enhance my therapies from the perspective of movement of energy. Also, although it is a massive subject I realised that it is accessible to all, thanks to Des. It makes me eager to find out more.“
- “Yes, very interesting working with energy movement rather than physical movement.”
Shibashi Teacher Training Comments

- “I would like to say a massive thank you to Des for passing on his great depth of knowledge in a very accessible way. The videos available to students have been a great bonus and the amount of information on the site reflects Des’ experience. I feel honoured to have had an introduction to such an extensive discipline from someone with such a great reputation all done in a very generous but humble way. “

- “I am so glad that I made the decision to attend a truly inspirational workshop and to have benefited from an introduction to the amazing powers of QiGong. I am aware that we only experienced an ‘insight’ but even so I consider that I am now in a better position to pass on quality teaching to my students, and having been an FE Lecturer for many years, I believe delivering quality is of paramount importance. I also thank you (and your wife) for your hospitality in providing delicious lunches and snacks – greatly appreciated!”

Uni has been horrendous and a few times it has been bad enough to make me consider leaving but doing Qigong has been a life saver. It has got me through some very tough times. Big thank you to you for teaching me this beautiful art. Qigong had definitely came into my life at the right time.”

Shibashi Teacher Training Feedback
- “I have some interesting news with regard to Shibashi. In the course of providing therapies I came across several clients that had experienced vertigo travel sickness and labyrinth syndrome. Due to [the fact] they all had movement issues and relaxation and peace was difficult to find, my instincts turned to the Shibashi. To start with we only worked on the movements seated. This had amazing results three individuals found that the dizziness, sickness and motion feeling eased after Shibashi. I am waiting on follow ups with this as there is a support group for these conditions where there is little medically to help other than very invasive treatment.”
- “Hi Des, I thought you might like to know the feedback I’m getting from my Shibashi class. We’ve been going for six weeks now. The classes are once a week for 45 minutes. We’ve covered the first 10 exercises plus Pressing Palms in Calmness. I take things slowly! Last night everyone said they could feel sensations in the palms of their hands. They were all beaming at me and nodding their heads like excited children. I don’t think they were pretending. One member of the group sent me an email on Monday, I’ve pasted an extract from her message below: “I’d a blood pressure at surgery today. Usually they take two checks. For one top number was a bit high. Second check and top number was 16 lower. In between I’d done a couple of ’tai chi’ breaths and visualised myself doing our class breathing/relaxation exercises. I told Dr. Charlie I’m crediting you and the Qigong classes!!” Doesn’t it make you feel good when folk are happy! Especially when there’s not a lot of happiness in the world right now. Once more, thank you for helping me and my students on our respective Qigong journeys. Cheers! Irene”
