You can read more about these early Qigong at The origins of Qigong – The Silk Exercises.

Over the past few years Des has used the Wednesday evening class to teach various Qigong at an intermediate level. To keep things fresh and to fulfil requests the class will be focusing on the Silk Exercises for the foreseeable future. This includes the Ba Duan Jin, the Ten Fundamental Treasures, and some (maybe all, who knows what direction the class will take us in) of the Silk Exercise sets .

The Ba Duan Jin is one of the most commonly practiced Qigong In the world. These Qigong have a variety of Anglicized names. Among them are: Eight Pieces of Brocade, the Eight-Section Brocade, and the Eight Silken Movements.

  • You will learn what meridians are being stimulated during each of the Qigong.
  • You will be taught the proper posture for each Qigong exercise.
  • You will be taught how to stay sunk (the Qi) and rooted (the weight, the physical) while shifting the weight from foot to foot.
  • You will learn what acupuncture points you should be focusing on.
  • You will be given guidance on where to listen and increase your awareness of the Qi.

In his other classes Des is covering sets like the Shibashi, the Five Elements Dance, the Five Taoist Yin, The Eight Exceptional Vessels, the Orbits, etc. What make these classes stand out is the fact that they are being taught as true Qigong so that students are learning in depth and gaining an experiential understanding of what Qigong actually is.

Des took the decision to create online Qigong classes because of the onslaught of the Covid-19 virus and the lock down that has been, necessarily, imposed by governments. The idea was that they can help to keep you active, healthy, and maybe stop you getting cabin fever. However, as the positive feedback and the progress of students has been overwhelming, he decided that they were here to stay. In fact some of Des’s students do the online classes and also attend his, live, Taiji classes.

What our students are saying about the San Bao online Qigong classes

When you practice true Qigong and access your Qi it opens doors to amazing experiences. True Qigong enhances awareness that goes beyond the physical. Here is just one example:

  • Hi Des,
Thanks for covering my question in the class. It makes more sense now – though I am sure there are still subtleties that I am missing.
    Regards
    Tara
  • As you know I have been practicing with Phil regularly for the past 2 years and I won’t forget the first time I felt Kidney 1 bubbling.
I particularly like the way you explain sinking and folding and also the movement in front stance. I have discovered that I was moving too far back and not keeping the wuji bend so have been practicing that, when I’m waiting for the kettle to boil ?
Also wanted to say that Tuesday was the first time I really felt Bladder on the back of my legs during Rowing the Boat.
I find Qigong fascinating. Thank you for sharing.

    Kind regards
    Brenda
  • Hi Des,
I have been practicing tai chi and Qigong Shibashi for 14 years but I have never felt the Qi before your classes.  Perhaps that says as much about my previous instructors as it does about me!
I should have mentioned that my Qigong participants are also my tai chi participants.  Most of them have been doing tai chi since 2018 when I started teaching so they’re familiar with flowing movements, weight transference, etc.  We always do a few minutes of abdominal breathing at the beginning of the class and while I’ve explained the concept of Qi (admittedly not very well) my folk weren’t grasping what I was struggling to describe.  Now we have something tangible to work with I’m hoping we will also develop our tai chi practice into being more than a physical exercise.

    Thanks again.

  • Just wanted to send you a quick email after our Tuesday morning exceptional vessels lesson. I think I’m now much better at opening the different Master points on the feet and ankles and I’m really enjoying the feeling of me guiding the qi flow, although I can’t quite believe I’m doing it!
Almost everyday now I experience a strong microcosmic flow which starts spontaneously when I’m standing in a relaxed way. I must admit the flow sensation is powerful and almost scares me a bit.
I’m enjoying my Qigong very much and I know it’s helped my health and outlook on life a lot. Keep up the great work!

    Best wishes R.
