Qigong for Beginners – The Basics

This online Qigong for Beginners course has optional captions (English, French & Spanish). It covers all of the basics for successful Qigong.

Qigong for Beginners includes: –

  • An explanation of the terms used. There are many unfamiliar terms used in Qigong and sometimes it can be confusing unless these terms are explained in  simple, easy to understand, language.
  • A glossary of common Qigong terms. This contains all the terms used in this course and a few more besides. It is a quick reference for you while doing the course. The Qigong stances. These include Wuji Stance, Horse Riding Stance, Bow Stance (also known as a Front Stance, or an Archery Stance), empty stances such as the Seven Stars Stance (Heel Stance) and the Cat Stance (Toe Stance). Without proper stance it is extremely difficult to settle the physical enough to appreciate the energetic (the Qi).
  • Qigong breathing. At a basic (physical) level this is abdominal breathing. This, in itself, is good practice for de-stressing and remaining stress free but in Qigong you are also focusing your Qi on the Dantien.
  • A simple Qigong exercise (Broaden the Chest, from the Taiji Shibashi) to get you started. This is a Metal Qigong that works with the Lung meridian and the Large Intestine meridian. It this lesson you will be taught what meridian and what Acupoints you should be focusing on and building the awareness of Qi in them. The benefits that can be gained from this exercise include: Lung meridian – stopping coughing, asthma, breathing difficulties, chest pains and shoulder pain. Large Intestine meridian – General well-being, strengthening and eliminating tiredness in the upper body, pain in the upper body and abdomen, sore throat, etc.

What types of Qigong are available?

Qigong can be broken down into two types:

  • Active Qigong, where physical movement is involved.
  • Passive Qigong, where no physical movement is involved.
The Five Taoist Yin. Qigong for beginners. Qigong course for beginners.

Qigong has many functions and among these are:

  • Health (Medicinal) Qigong, that works with the 12 Meridians.
  • Martial Qigong, that builds strength and flexibility.
  • Spiritual Qigong, that works with the consciousness.

The Qigong for Beginners course is the perfect starting point for all of these.

Why practice Qigong?

Even though each Qigong is often referred to as an exercise their practice is a pleasure rather than a chore. Qigong has many benefits but one of the first that is discovered, when practiced properly, is a feeling of calmness and wellbeing. That warm feeling is, partially, the result of a change in the brainwave frequency. Once this change begins, you then gain more access to your Qi and have more control over your wellbeing. It does not end with just a feeling of health, it impacts on a physiological, psychological and spiritual level. That is why Des created the Therapeutic Qigong courses so the people could take the first steps to regaining control of their health.   These online Therapeutic Qigong courses include: –

Benefits

The numerous benefits of the exercises in the Qigong for Beginners course include:

  • Stimulating Qi flow in the Yin and Yang meridians of the legs.
  • Stimulating Qi flow in the Arm Yin & Yang meridians.
  • Opening Mingmen and Dazhui (Du Mai 14). AKA “Big Bone” this is the first thoracic vertebra, where the Qi can often get stuck.
  • Bringing awareness of and building the skill of sinking the Qi while raising the Shen.

Why do the online Qigong for Beginners course?

The simple answer is that you will be practicing true Qigong form the outset. You will not be wasting time and energy performing slow aerobics. On far too many occasions I have met people, at my courses, who had been practicing “qigong” for decades. By the end of the day they realise that they had been up a cul de sac……………… one that they were now leaving to explore the wonderful world of true Qigong. This Qigong for Beginners course will help you build a strong foundation from which your Qigong can flourish. Every expert, no matter what their field of expertise is, started with the basics and understands just how crucial those “basics” are. Des.

Excellent course that shows you the importance of getting the foundations right. I’d been practicing qigong for several years before doing this course and learnt more in a few months than in all the years prior. Des is an excellent teacher who is passionate about qigong and makes it all clear how to get the stances right first, but more importantly how the focus is not on the external movement but on working with your qi.

Great beginner Qigong course. Des is a friendly and knowledgeable instructor, offering guidance on what to do and why. As well as what not to do and why not! A very good foundation.

I rate this course very highly. I came to the course with several years of Yang Family tai chi chuan experience, albeit a few years ago now, and regularly practice the standing qigong set still. I found the beginners course very well presented and informative and feel that my standing qigong practice has benefited hugely from Des’s teaching. I’ve kept practising the basics over and over! The two moving qigong exercises from the beginners course have whetted my focus and now I’m about to start on the Shibashi course. Thanks Des!

I'm relatively new to qigong/taiji and so far have found Des Lawton's courses the most helpful and informative. I was one of those who took a course and was just doing the movements and wondering why it felt like walking or running in place. Being new and ignorant I also didn't know what to ask. I'm so happy I decided to take a chance on purchasing this introduction to qigong. It put things in better perspective and the lessons made sense as I already feel energy. It wasn't that I didn't feel energy just doing the movements, but it wasn't consistent and I really didn't know what I was doing and felt there should be more. I am also doing qigong/taiji with the goal of expanding myself on a spiritual level. I soon realized I needed to refine things energetically to support that. I have no doubt taking additional courses from the San Bao School will help me in the ways I need. I only wish I lived in an area with a San Bao School teacher so I could have some in person instruction. Having said that, I appreciate Les Dawton's thorough approach and his desire to share the art.

Des takes the time to break down things and explain the whys and the hows which, apart from satisfying my own curiosity, pave the way for learning Qi Gong properly and prevent it from being merely physical exercises. The depth of Les' teaching, even in "just" a Beginners' course, is exactly what I was looking for and I am happy to have started my Qi Gong journey with the San Bao school.

I have been practicing the Cheng Man-ch'ing Yang short form for more than a decade. I found the Qigong for Beginners class very helpful and I recommend it to anyone beginning their Taiji or Qigong journey. If you are serious about learning Qigong this course will give you much to learn and practice for many years.

I have been practicing Chi Gong for many, many, years. This course of "basics" has completely altered my approach and I am getting far more from my practice. Des Lawton make it clear that all of these basics need to be in place before any real progress can be made. I thought that I already had a good foundation but this course showed that to be less than correct.

Even if you have been practicing for years, this course is one that you really need to have a look at. It may be that, like me, your understanding of the foundations needs to be worked on.
